Responsible Redeployment from Iraq

The war in Iraq has been misguided and mismanaged from the outset. It has cost us too many lives and too much money, while weakening our military readiness and putting our national security at risk.

While our troops have performed extraordinarily, they are stuck in the middle of a civil war with no end in sight. Even as General Petraeus, the commander of U.S. forces in Iraq, has warned that there is no military solution in Iraq, it is clear that President Bush plans to keep over 130,000 troops in Iraq until the end of his term.

Dan supports a phased withdrawal of American troops that is carried out responsibly, so as to minimize further destabilization of the region. A redeployment must be accompanied by clear, measurable goals that enable our troops to leave honorably, safely, and soon.  Redeploying our troops will allow us to return our focus to areas where our resources have been stretched thin by the conflict in Iraq—not only in the disintegrating situation in Afghanistan, but also in the global effort to combat terrorism.

Bringing our troops home doesn't mean the end of our support for Iraq. We should continue to provide our expertise and support, but the Iraqis must begin to take greater responsibility for the future of their country and make the necessary decisions to have a functioning government and secure nation.
