FOR CONGRESS: SEALS
A Promising New Voice With New Ideas For The 10th District
Chicago Jewish Star
Editorial Endorsement
Posted November 3, 2006
We have previously endorsed Mark Kirk, the GOP candidate in the 10th District, terming him a polished, articulate, knowledgeable voice for the district. In past balloting we made the difficult choice of recommending him over qualified opponents, including Lauren Beth Gash and Henry Perritt.
This year we again face a difficult choice. The reason is Mr. Kirk has done a fine job in Washington. Notably, he has been a great friend of Israel, demonstrating a vigorous, articulate, and well-considered support for the Jewish state, and an understanding of its problems. For that, we are extremely grateful.
But this year, other of Mr. Kirk’s views drag down his candidacy. He has no notable ideas about how to mend a deeply flawed health-care system, or how to resolve the vexatious issue of illegal immigration. Moreover, his reputation for aloofness — already noted by us in a 2002 editorial — continues to dog him and to leave constituents hungry for someone more warmly responsive to them.
Dan Seals shows promise, and proposes a program of action which is typically Democratic and which could produce positive results for the 10th District.
Mr. Seals’ views on the Jewish state — notwithstanding a whispering campaign against him — appear strongly (if formulaically) pro-Israel, judging from his official campaign program.
We endorse Dan Seals, trusting that Mr. Kirk will continue to serve the public in other venues.
