Candidates gear up for two forums

By Mike Riopell
Daily Herald Staff Writer

A pair of forums involving the two hopefuls in the 10th Congressional District are set, but only one will be open to the public.

Incumbent Congressman Mark Kirk, a Highland Park Republican, will square off with Democrat hopeful Dan Seals of Wilmette at an Oct. 26 debate hosted by the League of Women Voters.

It starts at 7:30 p.m. at Stevenson High School, 1 Stevenson Drive, Lincolnshire. It's free and open to the public. It will be taped for cable television.

The second forum, though, isn't open to the public and organizers are calling it a "joint appearance," not a debate.

Kirk and Seals will speak at Waukegan Yacht Club Oct. 31 and only reporters and members of the City Club of Waukegan will be able to attend.

Kirk is running radio spots and the Seals camp continues to organize a slew of coffees and other small events to get the word out.

Several nonpartisan observers have continued to rate the race as competitive.

The national Democratic organization has done the same, but has so far stopped short of sending Seals money that could help him hit the airwaves.
