Seals Wins Illinois AFL-CIO Endorsement
Wednesday, June 14, 2006 WILMETTE, Ill. - Dan Seals, Democratic Congressional candidate in the 10th District, is pleased to announce the endorsement of the Illinois AFL-CIO, the state affiliate of the federation of 53 national and international unions representing 9 million working men and women.
"I am honored to have the endorsement of the Illinois AFL-CIO. The organization and I share many ideals and goals. The AFL-CIO fights for justice in the workplace and justice in society as a whole. I will work to be a powerful advocate for the interests of working families. I support raising wages through responsible economic policies and guaranteeing the safety of every worker," Seals said.
"We have had enough of Mark Kirk doing nothing to help the working families of America. He claims to be a moderate, yet votes time after time against the wellbeing of workers-cutting funding for job training, weakening OSHA, and stripping 8 million U.S. workers of their overtime pay. In Dan we have a great candidate who will stand up for the needs of families, not special interests," said Margaret Blackshere, president of the Illinois AFL-CIO.
"Dan Seals understands the needs of workers and their families," added Blackshere. "He supports worker's rights to overtime pay, strong safety regulation, and opposes the Bush Administration's irresponsible plan to privatize social security. Come November, it will be exciting to have a Democrat who cares about the hard working families of America representing the 10th district."
Seals' opponent Mark Kirk holds the Republican leadership position of Assistant Majority Whip, which gives him the responsibility of enforcing party discipline and lining up members on critical party votes. A strong challenge by Dan Seals and declining approval for the Republican leadership have combined recently to upgrade Illinois' 10th District to the Cook Political Report's Competitive House Race Chart, which establishes Seals vs. Kirk as a nationally targeted race.
About Dan Seals Seals lives in Wilmette with his wife, Mia, and three young daughters. Born in Chicago, he received a master's in public policy from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and served as a Presidential Management Fellow during the Clinton Administration in both the Department of Commerce and Sen. Joseph Lieberman's office. Seals went on to earn his MBA from the University of Chicago. He is currently on leave from his position as Director of Marketing at GE Commercial Finance while he campaigns full time.
