The Voters Deserve Real Debates on the Issues in the 10th
Friday, August 4, 2006 WILMETTE, Ill. - Congressional Candidate Dan Seals has formally requested a series of six debates with his opponent in the 10th District.
In a letter sent today to the campaign office of U.S. Rep. Mark Kirk, Seals suggested that the debates would give the voters the opportunity to hear the candidates' views on the issues in their own words and on a fair playing field.
"It is absolutely essential for the voters to hear our contrasting visions for America," Seals said. "Only after weighing our positions and how we plan to address some of the critical issues of our day - such as escalating health care costs, the war in Iraq and escalating energy prices - can voters make a thoughtful choice in the November election."
"I hope my opponent will agree to hold these debates in multiple locations around the district to make them as accessible as possible for the greatest number of people," Seals said.
Seals requested the Kirk campaign staff contact his campaign manager by Wednesday, August 9, 2006 so that the scheduling process could begin as soon as possible.
The 10th District Race The Cook Political Report, a nonpartisan Washington political publication, recently upgraded the 10th District race between Dan Seals and Mark Kirk to its Competitive House Race chart. In a district that has voted for a Democrat in every presidential race since 1996, incumbent Congressman Mark Kirk votes with his party 91.49% of the time (from the nonpartisan Congressional Quarterly). Additionally, Kirk holds the Republican leadership position of Assistant Majority Whip, which gives him the responsibility of enforcing party discipline and lining up members on critical party votes. About Dan Seals Seals lives in Wilmette with his wife, Mia, and three young daughters. Born in Chicago, he received a master's in public policy from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and served as a Presidential Management Fellow during the Clinton Administration in both the Department of Commerce and Sen. Joseph Lieberman's office. Seals went on to earn his MBA from the University of Chicago. He is currently on leave from his position as Director of Marketing at GE Commercial Finance while he campaigns full time.
