Dan Seals Gaining Ground in 10th District Congressional Race
Wednesday, August 16, 2006 WILMETTE, IL - Democratic candidate Dan Seals is gaining ground in the Illinois 10th District Congressional race, another prominent, nonpartisan group reported recently.
In a strong sign the Seals campaign is gaining momentum over the Republican incumbent Rep. Mark Kirk, the 10th District race was changed to "Republican Favored" from "Republican Safe" by Congressional Quarterly, which tracks Congressional races nationwide. The downgrade for the Republican incumbent's campaign reflects an erosion of Kirk's once perceived insurmountable lead in the Nov. 7 election.
"While meeting and talking to voters in the district, I've sensed the race was tightening," Seals said. "The independent conclusion by Congressional Quarterly affirms what I and my campaign have seen in recent weeks."
"I'm excited to see my campaign's hard work and our message of change are getting the attention of voters and independent observers, particularly a non-partisan source like Congressional Quarterly."
The Congressional Quarterly is the second publication to report the 10th Congressional race has become more competitive. Earlier, The Cook Political Report, which also monitors election races across the country, reported the race between Seals and Kirk had tightened.
Seals credited his campaign's hard work and Kirk's political vulnerabilities for the tightening of the race. "I've gotten a lot of support for my ideas around getting out of Iraq, deficit reduction and reducing gasoline prices," Seals said. "Rep. Kirk votes over 91% of the time along the strict Republican Party line, which is certainly not the independent representation he claims to prove. The voters of the 10th District are not likely to forget or forgive that voting record."
The 10th District Race The Cook Political Report, a nonpartisan Washington political publication, recently upgraded the 10th District race between Dan Seals and Mark Kirk to its Competitive House Race chart. In a district that has voted for a Democrat in every presidential race since 1996, incumbent Congressman Mark Kirk votes with his party 91.49% of the time (from the nonpartisan Congressional Quarterly). Additionally, Kirk holds the Republican leadership position of Assistant Majority Whip, which gives him the responsibility of enforcing party discipline and lining up members on critical party votes.
