WILMETTE, IL - Illinois 10th District Congressional Candidate Dan Seals is calling on the U. S. State Department to exert pressure on the Sudanese government to release Chicago Tribune reporter Paul Salopek from jail.
Sudanese officials earlier this month arrested Salopek, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winning journalist with the Chicago Tribune, on charges of espionage and two additional criminal charges.
"Paul Salopek is an outstanding journalist, not a spy," Seals said. "It is important for Sudanese government to recognize that Salopek was in the country on assignment with National Geographic. The Chicago Tribune and National Geographic report on world events. Their reporters, like Salopek, write stories. None works as a spy."
