DCCC Chairman Rep. Chris Van Hollen, Dan Seals Call for Change in Course In Iraq

Highlighting Kirk’s Rubberstamp Support For President Bush’s Agenda, Emphasize Need to Elect New Leaders to Congress

February 21, 2008

Lincolnshire, IL —Today, standing with veterans from across the 10th District, Democratic Congressional Candidate Dan Seals and Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) discussed the need to change in course in Iraq and elect leaders to Congress with the independence to stand up for our troops and veterans.

Highlighting the enormous toll of the Iraq war with nearly 4,000 American lives lost, as well as recent news reports showing how the Iraq war has reduced our military’s readiness to respond to other conflicts across the globe, Seals said it is time for a new direction in the region.

“We are just one month away from the 5 year anniversary of the war in Iraq, a war that has been mismanaged from the start,” Seals said. “Our troops have held up their end of their bargain, now it’s time to change course and bring them home. But to change our course in Iraq, we need to change who we send to Congress.”

Seals and Van Hollen discussed Mark Kirk’s consistent support for President Bush’s failed policies in Iraq since being handpicked by the President in 2002 to help craft the language to go to war. Despite the thousands of American lives lost and the hundreds of billions of dollars spent in Iraq at the expense of important domestic needs, Kirk continues to support America's involvement in Iraq. Van Hollen highlighted the need for more representatives in Congress to stand up for a change in course in Iraq.

"On the critical matter of war and peace, we need an independent leader like Dan Seals with the courage to fight for change,” Van Hollen said. “I have no doubt that Dan will work tirelessly to bring a responsible end to the war in Iraq, fight on behalf of our veterans for the care they need, and ensure that our economy works for every American."

The veterans in attendance, who served their country in numerous foreign wars, echoed the sentiments of Van Hollen and Seals, saying our servicemen and women deserve leaders who will stand up for them.

“As a veteran of the Vietnam war, I understand the sacrifices being made by our young men and women in uniform,” Glenview native Captain Bob Emerson, U.S. Infantry said. “Every day they put their lives on the line to fight for our country; the least they deserve is a congressman who will fight for them. Dan shares these values and will honor our troops by bringing them home responsibly and ensuring they have the care they need when they return.”
