Dan Seals Receives Endorsement of IFT Local #1211

Cites Commitment to Reforming NCLB, Funding Public School Education

 December 14, 2007

Deerfield, IL - Today, Democratic candidate for Congress Dan Seals received the endorsement of the Illinois Federation of Teachers Northwest Suburban Teachers Union Local #1211, which represents 1280 teachers in the 10th District. Citing Seals’ commitment to reforming No Child Left Behind to work for Illinois school districts, educators, and students, IFT Local #1211 said he would bring much needed change to Washington.

“In 2006, we proudly endorsed Dan Seals based on his strong support for public education,” IFT Local #1211 Community Liaison Alan Prochaska and IFT Local #1211 President Shirley Forpe said. “Once again we are supporting Dan because his commitment to valuing our teachers and providing our students with a world class education is unmatched in this race. We know that he will be a strong representative for working families in the 10th district.”

Seals has been an outspoken supporter of reforming No Child Left Behind, which has burdened public schools with its one-size-fits-all standards and failed to deliver promised funding, leaving local school districts footing the bill. Seals not only supports fully funding NCLB, but also modifying its standards to take into account diverse student bodies, including those with higher special needs and ESL students, and reward progress in under-performing schools.

Seals highlighted Congressman Mark Kirk’s leadership role in the Republican-led Congress that consistently cut federal funding for education and underfunded No Child Left Behind by billions of dollars, promising to bring a different set of priorities to Washington.

“I’m proud to have the support of IFT Local #1211,” Seals said. “For too long, our public education system has suffered in the hands of the federal government. Our district deserves a representative in Congress who will fight to strengthen our public schools and give them the resources they need, not undermine them.”

IFT Local #1211 is the latest group to announce their support for Dan Seals, joining with every state level elected official in the district, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, former IL-10 Representative Abner Mikva, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), the New Trier Township Democratic Organization, the Northfield Township Democrats, and the Service Employees International (SEIU).
