Seals Urges Stronger Sanctions Against Iran

DEERFIELD—Today, Democratic Congressional Candidate Dan Seals urged President Bush to take stronger action against Iran. Just one day after missile tests from Iran, which threaten the security and stability of Israel and the entire Middle Eastern region, Seals emphasized the need for the United States to lead the effort to prevent Iran from gaining nuclear weapons.
“This Administration has not done nearly enough to limit Iran’s nuclear program,” said Seals. “Yesterday, Iran tested missiles capable of reaching Israel. We must stand firmly and unequivocally with Israel. It is up to us to lead the international community in isolating Iran economically and diplomatically until it ends its quest to acquire nuclear weapons.”
Seals said the United States must relentlessly push for international sanctions against Iran’s Central Bank and other international banks and energy companies investing in Iran and must work harder to convince other countries to prohibit the export to Iran of all refined petroleum products. Seals also reiterated his support for H.R. 1400, the Iran Counter-Proliferation Act of 2007, and H.R. 2347, the Iran Sanctions Enabling Act of 2007. Seals noted that even adjusting for inflation, United States exports to Iran have increased tenfold since Bush took office.
“The ascendancy of a nuclear Iran ranks among Bush’s greatest foreign policy failures,” Seals said. “It’s not enough to talk tough on Iran. We have to be smart, which is why we must pursue every available option to prevent Iran from developing nuclear arms.”
Seals continued, “In Congress, I will work tirelessly to ensure that we are taking every possible measure to prevent Iran from pursuing its agenda of destruction. The security of America, Israel, and the entire world depends on our success. While war must be a last resort, no option, including military actions, should be taken off the table.”
