Kirk’s Flip-Flops on Student Loans
Votes with Republicans AGAINST Bill that Will Help College Students Before Voting FOR Final Passage
July 12, 2007
Wilmette, IL-The United States House of Representatives passed the College Cost Reduction Act of 2007 on Wednesday, which will cut student loan interest rates in half and increases the amount of Pell Grants by $500 over the next 5 years.
Representative Kirk voted for the motion to recommit offered by Illinois Representative Peter Roskam, which would have killed the bill, but it did not pass (199-223).Then he flip-flopped and voted for final passage (273-149). Representative Kirk voted against the bill before he voted for the bill.
“Representative Kirk has continually shown his ability to side with Republican leadership against the best interests of his constituents. He votes one way to help his party and another to protect his re-election prospects.,” campaign spokesperson Patrick Mogge stated.
H.R. 2669, the College Cost Reduction Act, will make the largest investment in higher education since the 1944 GI Bill. The Act will benefit students and families at no new cost to taxpayers by cutting excess subsidies paid by the federal government to lenders in the student loan industry.
